Choosing the right furnace for your home depends on several factors, including your climate and your home’s size.

If you live in a cold climate, you’ll want to choose a furnace heating system that can generate enough heat to keep your home warm. If you have a large home, you’ll need a furnace that can circulate the air evenly. With that said, one of the most important factors is the correct size of furnace for the house. If the furnace is oversized, it will result in short cycling and uneven heat distribution. The longer the furnace runs, the more even the heat distribution is.

One of the furnace features that help to achieve this is a two stage gas valve or modulating gas valve furnace vs a single stage gas valve furnace. The two stage furnace is like a large and a small furnace together, this is controlled by the thermostat. In the morning or on the coldest days of the year, the furnace will run on the second stage to quickly heat the house or keep the house warm. During the day the furnace will run on the first stage to give longer run times and more even heat distribution. American Standard offers a modulating furnace that will run from 40 -100% in 3% increments up and down. The modulating furnace offers further comfort and increased heat disburition. This is achieved by the longer run times, with lower btu levels.

Some consumers are concerned the lower btu’s will not heat their house on the coldest day, but the furnace has full capability to heat your house when it’s cold. In fact, the system communicates with the thermostat so the furnace has all the information required to keep your house warm and comfortable.

There are two motor options available – variable speed and constant torque motor. The variable speed is a great motor when paired with an air conditioner or heatpump, as this will give the system additional airflow. The constant torque motor is an energy efficient multi speed motor, however not as energy efficient as the variable speed motor.

These furnaces are designed to operate at lower temperatures, which means they use less energy to heat your home. You’ll see savings on your heating bills with a high-efficiency furnace. The two biggest differences between mid-efficiency and high efficiency furnaces are the venting and drainage requirements. The high efficiency furnace will vent with plastic pipes known as 636. This is a pipe designed for high efficiency appliance venting. In a retrofit application the venting is generally run to the side wall of the house, however in a new construction or full house reno the venting

could also be run to the roof like a b-vent. The second major difference is the requirement for drainage, as the venting temperature is cooler than a mid-efficient. This creates moisture in the exhaust and leads to condensation, and the need for drainage.

A number of High efficient furnaces qualify for Fortis rebates, this is generally $800 for 96% efficient furnaces or $1000 for 97% efficient furnaces. American Standard offers S9V2-VS two stage, variable speed motor and AUHM modulating furnace with variable speed motor. Both furnaces qualify for a $1000 Fortis rebate.

A standard efficiency furnace is a good choice if you’re not concerned about saving money on your energy bills. These furnaces operate at higher temperatures, so they use more energy to heat your home. However, they’re typically less expensive than high-efficiency furnaces. However standard or mid efficient furnaces no longer meet Canadian gas code and can not be purchased or installed.
